Aug 22, 2014 at 6:06 comment added Paul Dessert It's all very twisted, but +1 to: "I understand I work for Bob on this project, but as a professional, I cannot, in good conscience, proceed per current direction"
Aug 21, 2014 at 3:50 comment added Xavier J I dont think it was the best idea for the OP to work for "Bob" with the same end client. "Bob" might not pay!!! Or, Bob might be doing the ol' "you don't get paid until I get paid" trick.
Aug 20, 2014 at 22:10 comment added Emily @codenoire, the OP said elsewhere that his contract is with Widgets so I'm confused too. something about this situation is very twisted. I've been there... If nothing else I would analyze exactly how it happened and prepare to make sure there is no repeat. llana I am curious how it happened that you are doing the work but Bob has control and the lion's share of credit/money. I am guessing you were caught off guard and trying to be a nice guy to everyone when this was proposed.
Aug 20, 2014 at 21:00 comment added Xavier J I read it again. Ooh, that's one heck of a conflict-of-interest. I wouldn't have done it, MOST especially since if I was doing work for the same client, why would I accept less than my regular rate?
Aug 20, 2014 at 20:52 comment added Emily @codenoire, the OP said Bob is a freelancer to their mutual client, Bob outsourced that work to the OP for a fraction of the pay (I assume a fraction of the pay Bob is getting). Also that Bob is now the boss on the project. So doesn't that make the OP Bob's sub contractor?
Aug 20, 2014 at 20:46 comment added Emily That makes sense. Bob still needs to be punished for biting off more than he can chew... ;-)
Aug 20, 2014 at 13:51 comment added Ilana @Emily They've been working with Bob for years and with me less than a year, so they go to him first. They don't understand the difference between design and programming. It's all interchangeable "geek stuff" to them.
Aug 20, 2014 at 0:45 comment added Xavier J Emily, I think you missed something. The OP is not a subcontractor of Bob.
Aug 19, 2014 at 20:32 comment added Emily That's good. Did you compete with Bob for this project, or did they just pick him then he came to you? (just curious) I once had a larger company approach me to be their sub contractor on a training project for one of my own clients. I said "but my rate is as high as yours so how would that work?" I didn't hear from them again, but I also didn't get the project.
Aug 19, 2014 at 19:20 comment added Ilana Clever trick with the innocent questions! I'm going to give that a try. Re: your side note, I have another (Bob-free) project with Widgets Inc that is paying well above my standard rate, so I think they value me. I'm getting underpaid on this project because they think that Bob is doing most of the work.
